When Cassio first meets his fiancée, she addresses him as "sir." After the loss of his wife, Cassio finds himself responsible for two young children while also attempting to establish his rule in Philadelphia. Now, he is in need of a mother for his children and a companion to share his bed at night. However, in a society as traditional as his, choosing a wife is seen as a duty rather than a pleasure. There are rules to be followed and traditions to be upheld. This is how he ultimately ends up with a young woman who is barely of age. She may not be exactly what he and his children need, but she is beautiful and presents a tempting allure that he cannot resist.
